Club Handicap Series 2012

Below is an idea for a handicapped club run competition:

Handicapping System (how it works):

Over the past year 5 club runners of various abilities have all completed various 10k runs with their personal best (PB) times below:

Runner A 28:30

Runner B 41:56

Runner C 1:03:55

Runner D 56:20

Runner E 29:00

Runner A is the fastest runner and so gets 0 time benefit in his runs in the handicap system.

Runner Bs PB is 13:26 slower so will have 13:26 time benefit in all 10K races in the club competition.

Runner Cs PB is 35:25 slower so will have 35:25 time benefit in all 10K races in the club competition.

Runner Ds PB is 27:50 slower so will have 27:50 time benefit in all 10K races in the club competition.

Runner Es PB is 00:30 slower so will have 00:30 time benefit in all 10K races in the club competition.

There will be the same calculation done for half marathon PB times.

In the first 10K run in the club competition the 4 runners finish in the

following times:

Runner A 27:20

Runner B 41:54

Runner C 1:04:45

Runner D 55:40

Runner E 28:50

There finish time – handicapped time benefit then gives a Handicapped finish time which a finish position is then calculated from:

Runner A 27:20 – 0             = 27:20  Handicapped Position : 1 Points : 50

Runner B 41:54 – 13:26     =  28:28  Handicapped Position : 4 Points :  47

Runner C 1:04:45 – 35:25 =  29:20  Handicapped Position:  5 Points :  46

Runner D 55:40 – 27:50     =  27:50  Handicapped Position:  2 Points :  49

Runner E 28:50 – 00:30     = 28:20 Handicapped Position:  3 Points :  48

The handicapped finish position is then given a score, with 50 points for 1st, 49 points for 2nd , 48 points for 3rd and so on. Any runner that does not compete in the race will be given 0 points.

The next 10K race

Runner A 29:50

Runner B 41:32

Runner C 1:01:28

Runner D 00:00 (did not compete)

Runner E 29:55

They then have the time benefit taken off their times to get a Handicapped finish time:

Runner A 29:50 – 0              = 29:50 Handicap Position : 3 Points :  48

Runner B 41:32 – 13:26      =  27:56  Handicap Position : 1  Points :  50

Runner C 1:03:28 – 35:25  =  28:03  Handicap Position : 2  Points :  49

Runner D 00:00 – 27:50      =  -27:50  Handicap Position :   Points :  0

Runner E 30:55 – 00:30      =  30:25  Handicap Position : 4  Points :  47

So after 2 races the positions are:

Runner A 50+48    =   98 points  Current position  1

Runner B 47+50    =   97 points Current position  2

Runner C  46+49   =   95 points Current position  =3

Runner D  49+0     =   49 points Current position  5

Runner E  48+47   =   95 points Current position   =3

Out of the handicapped races the 5 highest points scored will count towards the final scores.  If people only complete 3 races they could still potentially win as they will get 2 scores of 0 added to their total for the races that they did not get a result from to make up 5 qualifying races.

The previous years 10K PB will be used as a starting point each year to give a fair starting point, although beginners may get a benefit as they will improve the most but surely this is a good thing as they will see their improvement in real terms and may get a club prize at the end of the year for their efforts.

With this system you could also use the points to have a men v women mini-league with the top 3 male/female finishers scores adding towards the Male v Female title, age groups mini-league could also be looked at next year if there is enough interest and of course best female and best male winner and an overall winner at the end of the year.

If we have the funds we could also have the final race as the West Pinchbeck 10K in September and the club would pay towards the entrance fee for any club member that has entered at least 4 of the races. This would then be the final race and then the prize giving would be at the AGM in November.

For runners that do not have a PB time for 10k and half marathon distances then the PB times will be predicted using an internet based time prediction calculator. The races that I have looked through the calendar and picked out are a mixture of distances and surfaces:

We are now four races into the competition and Ian Swinscoe is the overall leader with 197 points, although only the best five results count towards the overall finish and he is the only person to of competed in all four races so far so he is the one to beat, second overall and leading the ladies competition is Lou Henderson with 144 points. Both Ian and Lou have been smashing their PBs at races this year and so have been picking up lots of points. They are definitely the ones to aim for in the coming races. Equal third overall is Greg Southern and Michael Baxter both on 140 points, fifth overall and the second lady is Debbie Sutton with 91 points, sixth overall and the third man is Andy Taylor on 88 points and eighth overall and third lady is Lisa Harmon with 83 points.

Next months races are Woodall Spa 10k and Sleaford 10k. There is some doubt about whether the Sleaford 10k is on as the only place I have seen it advertised is the Scouts website and I have been trying to get hold of them to confirm but have had no reply yet. If I do not get a reply by Thursday 24 May then we will change the qualifying  race to The Summer Solstice 10k, but I will let you all know.

If I have made any mistakes please let me know so that I can make the changes as soon as possible.

Happy Racing

Gary
